Although the Cape Verde flag uses colors that can be found on many other flags around the world, its design sets it apart. The Flag of Cape Verde uses red, white, and blue in horizontal stripes across the flag. The blue color represents the Atlantic Ocean, where the chain of islands is located. The red stripe centered in the middle of the white stripe symbolizes economic progress, while the white color represents peace. It’s even more meaningful when you realize that the majority of the flag is colored blue, just as the islands are surrounded by water off the coast of Africa.
The Cape Verdean flag is further differentiated from others as it’s decorated with 10 yellow stars which represent the 10 islands that make up Cape Verde. This particular design was adopted on September 22, 1992, replacing the flag adopted during Cape Verdean’s struggle for independence.
